Along with this beauty comes a wood with superior stability and hardness when compared to other American hardwoods.
Strength is always a necessity for a good solid floor. Mesquite has a hardness of 2345 pounds per square inch (PSI) when tested with the standard hardness test for wood. Compare the hardness of mesquite to other familiar hardwoods such as red oak 1290 PSI and hard maple 1450 PSI and you discover one of the many advantages of using mesquite. You can use thinner pieces of mesquite to achieve the same or greater strength in your woodworking projects.
Dimensional stability is the other measure of a wood and is very important in flooring. The moisture gain by the wood is what causes them to expand and even buckle when they get wet. Due to its desert survival mesquite wood will expand far less than most hardwoods. Its dimensional change per percent is 0.00129 inch. A five inch board will change as follows; 3 X 0.00129 = 0.00387 X 5 (board size) = 0.019 inches. Red oak for the same moisture and board size will change .05535 inches and hard maple .05295 inches. According to the National Wood Flooring Association, mesquite is the most dimensionally stable commercial hardwood available.
Mesquite is environmental friendly to harvest. Mesquite grows rapidly and is a very hardy species that can not be "logged" out. Only recently has mesquite been considered anything other than a firewood which means that you can have a truly unique floor or woodworking project by bringing the beauty of mesquite into your home or business.
